Hardwood flooring is a huge investment. No matter if you had it installed brand new, or brought an old floor back to life, the amount of time, money, and patience that went into it can be monumental. Now that it’s done, you might be wondering what you can do to keep it in great shape, or how to fix the day to day wear and tear! We’ve gathered some of our favourite tips and tricks from our years of experience.
Iron Your Floor!(?): We’re starting with a surprising one. Did you know you can actually iron your hardwood floor? Take a wet cloth and put it on your hardwood floor over any dents and use your regular home iron to flatten the surface out! As with anything hardwood floor related, try it in an inconspicuous spot first.
Pull Up Your Socks: Socks are an everyday part of many people’s wardrobes, but did you know that a good pair of tube socks can help your hardwood floors? When you’re moving furniture, put socks on their feet to avoid scratching and denting your investment!
Scuffs and Scrapes and Sharpies! Oh My!: If you’re finding scratches and scuffs in your hardwood floor, don’t get discouraged. The easy solution is a good ol’ magic eraser and some elbow grease; but if you don’t have a magic eraser on hand, pull out the toothpaste. Put a little bit on a damp cloth and get to scrubbing. It can even work on permanent marker if your child has decided to channel their inner Van Gogh.
Oil Up Your Floor!: Scratches can be very unsightly on your hardwood floor. If you’re looking for an easy way to minimize their visibility, mix one-part vinegar, and two parts canola oil. Use a cloth to apply the mixture to scratches and gently rub it into the wood. You don’t even need to wipe it away!
