Price can be tricky. A chocolate bar may cost $1 at one store but may be more expensive at a different store. Two chocolate bars could cost different amounts at one store, depending on the quality of the ingredients. And not to compare chocolate bars to building homes, but the cost of building a customer isn’t far off from that same formula! The Cost To Build a Custom Home will depend on a number of factors beyond the size and quality of materials.
The main things to consider when building your home starts out with these five pieces:
The Shell: The shell, or the outside of your home, consists of walls, windows, doors, and roofing is usually the biggest part of your cost.
The Interior: This is going to be the other big part of your overall cost. Cabinets, flooring, finishes, and countertops can eat up to a third of your budget depending on your location, and the materials used.
Mechanical: This is going to be heating, plumbing, and electrical. This can be up to 13% of your budget.
Kitchens and Bathrooms: These are your most expensive rooms to build in your home. Finishes and countertops can add up quickly, plus fixtures, so depending on your budget, you may want to rethink that second bathroom or half bath in the basement.
Architectural Drawings: This is another cost that a lot of folks tend to overlook. To have that dream home become a reality, an architect needs to make sure that it’s realistic!
Remember too that there are other costs beyond the home itself, like the land for the house, the cost of prepping the land for a home, and your building permit.
